Packing List for Corsica GR20

Multi-day trekkers carry all their worldly possessions on their backs so it is not surprising that one of the most common topics of conversation is pack weight. Ultra-light backpacking is very much in vogue these days, fuelled by thru-hikers from the US on long-distance trails like the Pacific Crest Trail. The gear manufacturers are riding this trend by making some incredible kit that makes it easier and easier for us to carry less weight. Less weight means less strain on the body and this enables us to travel further and faster.

These days, on hut to hut treks (where no camping equipment is required), I can achieve a pack weight of around 5kg (excluding water). For camping treks, I now carry 7kg (excluding food and water): and that is without having to get rid of some luxuries.

I am starting the Corsica GR20 this week and will be camping all the way. I thought some of you would like to see what I will carry so I made this video.......

Don't forget a battery pack. There are not many places where you can recharge!

Have a good one!

Some really interesting ideas. Think I’m going to swap my heavy footprint for the tyvec but wondering how you anchor it down (or not!)? Love the look of that Thermarest sleeping bag as my Rab neutrino spits feathers like nobodies business and weighs in at about 830 grams.

You don’t anchor the Tyvek down. Just put the tent on top and anchor it down.

Andy,
I've used these things:
https://www.raymears.com/Bushcraft_Product/652-Clingons-Mini/
and then peg them down with some of these:
https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/15898775/hi-gear-groundsheet-pegs-8cm-15898775
It all adds to the weight, of course, and though they're all fairly light, it adds up, doesn't it?

Did you hike the Gr20 in June? I’m about to go for the trail from 6 June this year. I wonder if you used the crampons? Is it necessary to bring them?

Last year was a heavy snow year. So in the first week of June many were using crampons. I started a week later and did not need them. Really it depends on the year. You won't know until a few weeks beforehand. A

Hello
Can you please expand on the Soto wind master; can it be purchased with the pan and rubber hand- is it a set in other words?
Thanks

Very helpful packing video.
Crampon question.
i am doing GR-20 in June 2024 - first walking day is 9 June (but going north to south so snow in north more likely to have cleared by time get there).
That said, crampons may still be good insurance policy to take. I am looking at the Leopards based on your enthusiasm. (I have don't own crampons but have used in past, as well as microspikes)

From the Petzl website tight have 2 versions. It looks like you have the ultra-lightweight (LLF) 330g version designed for boots with the toe and heel welts rather than the standard 'FL' 384g version for boots without toe and heel welts.
But that would mean the boots you took on the GR20 were more like ski mountaineering boots with definite fixings for traditional crampons. Which doesn't seem likely.
I have a pair of Asolo full height solid hiking boots, but they don't have welts on them - hence the FL version seems to be what i need.
Any clarification appreciated.

Am doing the walk with 2 others from different countries and we have all got your book - a good read.
Thanks
Stephen

Hi Andrew,

My apologies - I realise I got it mixed up on my crampon question. Please ignore my earlier email.
The ones you have are indeed the standard FL Leopards on re-examining your packing video, with the white pull straps to hold them over the boots.
Apologies for any confusion caused if you read the first email

Regards
Stephen
